The motif of this cult stone originates from a stick handle made of royal stag antler.
The find was discovered at Køge Beach on Sealand and dates back to approx. AD 950 to AD 1025.
The motif is a stone mask resembling a bearded man. The style is known as Mammen style – a forerunner of the Jellinge style.
A corresponding motif can be found on the Århus mask; a runic stone used as a cornerstone below the old water mill in Århus.
The motif is thought to have had a defensive function against evil. This kind of ornamentation is not found on many metal objects, however, instead on wood and horn which seem to have been the primary materials used.
