15 reliefs of mermaids, fabulous animals, horses and human beings have been built into the church in Lem. The side aisle has images of four reliefs and the motif on the cult stone is taken from one of these.
The church in Lem was built around the year 1200 and the reliefs date back to the same period. The church burnt in the 16th century. According to the legend, a farm hand used his muzzle loader to shoot pigeons on the thatched roof.
The cult stone represents a four-headed dragon and a swung body. The basilisk is closely related to dragons and this is the story of its origin.
An egg laid by a cock is hatched by a toad. Out comes an ordinary and normal chicken, however, after seven days it grows a dragon’s tail. It is very dangerous. Its breath and look is lethal. No grass can grow in its footsteps.
Dragons and basilisks may be a vague memory of the lizards of the past before mankind took over and inhabited the Earth.
